Meet Our Interns

Derrin Fukuda, M.S.

Derrin Fukuda, M.S. is a doctoral candidate completing his doctoral internship at Chehalem Youth and Family Services. His work with clients is grounded primarily in Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT). CBT is based on the theory that one’s thoughts, behaviors, and emotions are interrelated. Changes in one of these areas will produce change in the other two. Derrin believes that the therapeutic relationship is the most important part of the therapeutic process. As a therapist he strives to be empathetic, genuine, caring, and culturally competent in his practice. He is collaborative in his practice in that he encourages his clients to become active participants in their treatment. He understands that making the decision to come to therapy can be difficult. With that in mind, he strives to provide a safe environment for his clients.

Derrin is currently in his fifth year of the clinical psychology program at Pacific University School of Professional Psychology. He received his B.S. in Psychology from Pacific University in Forest Grove, Oregon. He also holds a M.S. degree in Clinical Psychology from Pacific University School of Professional Psychology. He was born and raised in Hawaii and enjoys spending time with his family, watching and playing sports, and playing video games.

During this doctoral internship, he will be working under the supervision of Holly Hetrick, Psy.D., Licensed Psychologist.

Jessica A. Reina, M.A.

Jessica A. Reina, M.A. is a doctoral student completing her psychology internship at Chehalem Youth and Family Services.  She primarily conceptualizes from a Systemic Approach, although she also uses cognitive behavioral, interpersonal, and psychodynamic interventions.  A systemic approach helps her understand you from various perspectives, interpersonally - the way you relate to others, intrapersonally - the way you relate to yourself, and systemically - the way you relate and connect to groups and organizations that are important in your life.  Her primary goal in working with you is that you walk away from your session having explored different areas of your life and learned new tools that will help bring peace, joy, and growth to your world.  She hopes to work with you through difficult moments, by actively listening, exploring, and validating your struggles.  At times, she may suggest assignments or practice outside of the therapeutic session in order to apply skills learned to your everyday life.

Jessica has completed four years of her doctorate program at Azusa Pacific University (Azusa, CA) and is now fulfilling the final requirement in order to receive her Doctorate in Psychology with an emphasis in Family Psychology.  She received her Bachelor of Arts in Psychology from California State University, Northridge. She also holds a Master of Arts degree in Clinical Psychology from Azusa Pacific University.

During her internship placement, she will be working under the supervision of Holly Hetrick, Psy.D., Licensed Psychologist.

Kim Coppersmith, M.S.

Kim Coppersmith, M.S. is a doctoral student completing her practicum placement at Chehalem Youth and Family Services. Her work with clients is grounded primarily in the theory of Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), although she also use interventions from Gestalt and Cognitive Behavioral Therapy. In general, ACT postulates that thoughts should be accepted, not changed and teaches clients how to notice, accept, and embrace their private events, especially unwanted ones. As a therapist, her goals are to help individuals gain insight and awareness of both problematic and functional patterns in their lives. In session she will work collaboratively with you to learn how to become more accepting of your thoughts and feelings. Furthermore, she will help you to identify your personal values and discuss with you ways you can shape your behavior to best ensure you are living a more fulfilling life. She will often suggest homework or experiments in which you apply things discussed in session to your personal life.

Kim is currently in her third year of the clinical psychology program at Pacific University. She received her Bachelor of Arts in Psychology from St. Thomas University in St. Paul, Minnesota. She also holds a Master of Science degree in Clinical Psychology from Pacific University.

During this practicum placement, she will be working under the supervision of Holly Hetrick, Psy.D., Licensed Psychologist.

Carolyn Buck, M.A.

Carolyn Buck, M.A. is a Student Therapist here at Chehalem Counseling Center. Her approach to therapy involves thinking about people within the context of their environment, relationships and patterns. She works collaboratively with clients to identify and work towards their individual goals. As each person is unique, she seeks to implement the most effective form of therapy for each client on an individual basis.

Carolyn is in her third year of the doctoral program for clinical psychology at George Fox University. She received her Bachelor of Arts in Psychology from Florida Atlantic University. She also holds a Master of Arts degree in Clinical Psychology from George Fox University and a Master of Arts degree in Counseling Psychology from Trinity International University.

To ensure clients get the best possible care, Carolyn is supervised by Holly Hetrick, PsyD.

Susan Stucchi, M.S., M.A.

Susan Stucchi, M.S., M.A. is a doctoral student therapist at Chehalem Youth and Family Services. Although her primary therapeutic approach is based on Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), she also uses interventions from Gestalt, Humanistic and Systemic approaches to help clients to overcome their symptoms. CBT is based on the assumption that thoughts, behaviors, and emotions are interrelated. Following this assumption, a change in one area will produce change in the other two. It is likely that distressing symptoms are caused by a combination of factors including genetic predisposition, biological or physical factors, core beliefs, early learning experiences, significant personal life events, and sociocultural factors. For a successful therapy experience, she believes that is important to engage in a safe, compassionate, culturally competent and patient-centered therapeutic relationship.

Susan is currently in her four year of the clinical psychology program at Pacific University. She has received her Master of Arts degree in Marriage and Family Therapy from Saint Mary’s University of Minnesota. Additionally, she has also obtained a Master of Science degree in Clinical Psychology from Pacific University.

During this practicum experience, she will be working under the supervision of Dr. Holly Hetrick, Psy.D., Licensed Psychologist.
